Johnny-Ride-the-Pony (also johnny-ride-a-pony or johnny-on-a-pony) is a traditional New York Street Game that has been played for generations. It is sort of a mix beteween Leap-Frog and Pile-On.
How to play Johnny-Ride-a-Pony
To play Jonnie Ride the Pony you must first divide into 2 teams. Next, one person from Team A becomes the “post.” The “post” stands against a wall.
Meanwhile, the other players from Team A crouch over and form a line #1 rests his head against the posts waist #2grabs #1 waist and so on…
Team B stands back about 20 or 30 feet and as 1st runner yells Jonnie ride the pony 123 he runs and jumps as far forward on the backs of Team A as he can get. Next, player # 2 runs and jumps on the back of the previous player yelling “Johnnie ride the pony 123.” Team B keeps going until all players are on the backs of Team A or Team A collapses from the weight.
After the first round the sides are reversed and team B becomes the post. The bottom “post” team gets a point for each player that they can hold up or points for players who can not jump on to the heap.
The best way to win is to make sure your post is your strongest player and that your last riders to leap can jump the highest.
